About Us

A Strong Foundation for Lifelong Learning

Shining Rock Classical Academy is a tuition-free K-8 public charter school located in Waynesville, North Carolina, serving families throughout Haywood County and the surrounding region. Since opening its doors in 2015, the school has provided families with a high-quality educational choice rooted in academic excellence, character development, and meaningful relationships.

We believe education should do more than prepare students for the next grade level—it should prepare them for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service. Through a challenging classical curriculum, engaging hands-on experiences, and a supportive school community, we help students develop the knowledge, confidence, and character needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Our Mission

Shining Rock Classical Academy cultivates critical thinking skills and fosters a lifelong love of learning through rigorous academics, experiential education, service to others, and our core values of Integrity, Respect, Compassion, Responsibility, Wisdom, and Leadership.

Every aspect of our school is guided by this mission. We strive to create an environment where students are challenged academically while learning the importance of personal responsibility, kindness, perseverance, and integrity.

A Classical Education with Purpose

Shining Rock Classical Academy was founded to bring meaningful school choice to the families of Western North Carolina. From the beginning, the school has embraced a classical approach to education, utilizing the Core Knowledge Sequence to build a strong academic foundation that grows year after year.

Our curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, literacy, mathematics, science, history, and the arts while encouraging students to ask thoughtful questions, solve problems, and make meaningful connections across subject areas. By building knowledge systematically, students gain the confidence and skills they need to become independent learners and thoughtful citizens.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Education is most powerful when students have opportunities to apply what they learn. At Shining Rock Classical Academy, experiential education extends learning beyond textbooks through hands-on activities, collaborative projects, outdoor learning experiences, and service opportunities that connect students with their community.

These experiences encourage curiosity, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving while helping students understand how classroom learning applies to the world around them.

A Community That Knows Every Student

As a K-8 school, Shining Rock Classical Academy offers a close-knit learning environment where students are known, valued, and supported throughout their educational journey. Our dedicated teachers and staff work closely with families to foster strong relationships built on trust, communication, and shared expectations for student success.

We believe students thrive when they feel safe, encouraged, and connected. By creating a positive school culture centered on respect and belonging, we help every child develop the confidence to reach their full potential.

Our Core Values

Character education is woven into daily life at Shining Rock Classical Academy. Our six core values guide how we teach, lead, and serve our students:

  • Integrity – Doing what is right, even when no one is watching.
  • Respect – Valuing ourselves, others, and the world around us.
  • Compassion – Showing kindness, empathy, and a willingness to help others.
  • Responsibility – Taking ownership of our actions and commitments.
  • Wisdom – Applying knowledge with sound judgment and thoughtful decision-making.
  • Leadership – Serving others by setting positive examples through words and actions.

These values help students develop into responsible, caring individuals who are prepared to make positive contributions to their families, communities, and the world.
